Residential Energy Efficiency Program

A Energy Efficiency Project by Greenplanet

A Energy Efficiency Project by Greenplanet

Client: Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN)
Location: Fort Chipewyan, Alberta

Project Overview

The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN) is a nation of about 1,200 people, one-third of whom live in Fort Chipewyan. In 2018, Greenplanet supported ACFN to develop a Community Energy Plan which established a framework to support a series of projects that would allow ACFN members to reduce energy consumption and improve energy efficiency. Improvement of affordability and comfort of ACFN member homes was identified as a key priority. Using local data, Greenplanet demonstrated that energy efficiency efforts were a lower cost investment for a higher cost and emissions savings impact.

Greenplanet then worked with ACFN to design and deliver a Residential Energy Efficiency Project which included Energy Assessments and Energy Efficiency Retrofits.

Key Outcomes

  • Completed detailed energy assessments of 93 ACFN band-owned buildings
  • Created a housing database to track retrofits, maintenance and energy savings
  • Provided preliminary training for the ACFN Housing Team and community members on energy efficiency concepts and how to implement building retrofits
  • Completed 51 retrofits on ACFN homes
  • Recruited and trained two Energy Managers
  • Produced 40 customized educational resource materials related to energy efficiency in a northern climate
  • 49.8t CO2eq annual GHG savings

  • $21,600 annual operating cost savings for ACFN members
