GEA operates as virtual office with a current team of 11 staff and associates working from home offices and in the field. The green building project manager must have convenient access to senior partners and staff residing in the Drayton Valley – Brazeau County area, or Edmonton.

1. Green Building Project Manager

JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the President, the Green Buildings Project Manager is responsible to support project definition and development and manage execution of green building projects that range from energy efficiency upgrades and retrofits to new building design and construction. The Project Manager will be responsible for developing project proposals, work plans and budgets, and for managing project execution. Project development will often include assessment and recommendation of energy efficiency technologies and systems, and quantification of associated economic and environmental benefits. In addition to strong project management skills, a background in developing technical specifications, managing RFP processes, and managing project contracts will be important. The project work requires direct client engagement, often in remote communities, and strong communication skills are a requirement.

REQUIRED:  We are looking for a hardworking, confident, motivated person with:

  • Convenient access to the Drayton Valley / Brazeau County / Edmonton area
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma related to energy efficiency, sustainability, construction, or engineering, or equivalent training and experience.
  • Training and a minimum of five to ten (5-10) years of experience in energy conservation, sustainability, renewable energy, deep energy retrofits, energy management, energy efficient building construction, or related fields.
  • A minimum of five to ten (5 to 10) years of experience managing small to medium sized capital projects from initiation to close-out, preferably in building or residential construction, with strong client-facing focus.
  • Ability to conduct dwelling and building inspections.
  • Knowledge of energy conservation principles, building management and facilities maintenance.
  • Strong Microsoft computer skills (MSWord, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Class 5 Drivers License.
  • A friendly, outgoing personality and high comfort level communicating with suppliers, team members and client representatives over a wide range of tasks.
  • Demonstrated honesty and integrity and a clear understanding of confidentiality obligations.
  • An exceptional work ethic.

THE WORK:

  • Work directly with clients, their staff, and building occupants to understand their energy use, and to develop specific recommendations for energy efficiency upgrades.
  • Develop project proposals that clearly define scope and approach, work plan and budget to facilitate client approval, and to support project funding applications.
  • Prepare and submit funding applications to support projects. Where required, adjust project scope and approach to align with funding parameters.
  • Prepare and manage RFPs and contracts as required to deliver green building projects.
  • Manage project execution following accepted project management practices. Clearly communicate with clients and with GEA leaders to ensure all stakeholders are continuously aware of project status and issues.
  • Build capacity in our clients by openly engaging with them at all stages of project development and delivery.
  • Communicate with clients and community members about project goals, principles, and activities to maintain understanding and support for the project.
  • Research alternative/renewable energy, and energy efficiency technologies and determine their technical feasibility, best use, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Other duties as assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research, define, and recommend priorities for energy efficiency upgrades specific to each client, based on cost savings, payback periods that reflect client costs and savings, greenhouse gas emissions reductions, and other client priorities.
  • Develop specifications, cost estimates, and business cases for energy efficiency upgrades.
  • Develop project plans, complete with budgets, schedules, and work plans. Manage and report on these to clients, Greenplanet leaders and staff, and at times, government agencies.
  • Support business development with new and existing clients through proactive relationship management, networking, written and verbal proposals, developing and maintaining marketing materials such as PowerPoint decks and case studies.

  • Working in home office, client office, job site, and community environments.
  • Travel approximately 25% of the time.
  • Reasonable flexibility in working hours within the 8 am to 6 pm Monday to Friday window,
  • The successful candidate must be able to supply a quiet and productive workspace at home, or within another office centre workspace that can provide confidentiality and security regarding sensitive information.
  • GEA is flexible and can offer either an employee or contractor arrangement.

2. Sustainable Development Project Manager

JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the President, the Sustainable Development Project Manager is responsible to lead the definition, development, and execution of projects that deliver measurable economic and environmental benefits to GEA clients, including First Nations and Northern communities. Project opportunities may arise through formal engagements, such as Community Energy Planning, or through informal client discussions and interactions. Opportunities – depending on their nature – may then progress through a formal feasibility and business planning stage or may proceed directly to implementation.  The Project Manager will be responsible for developing project proposals, work plans and budgets, and for managing project execution. In addition to strong project management skills, practical experience solving problems and getting things done in small teams is important. The position requires considerable creativity and flexibility, and strong communication and client engagement skills.

  • Experience developing business plans for new business ventures – preferably in a small business domain.
  • Awareness of renewable energy systems and energy efficiency principles, and a strong interest in developing a deeper understanding through self-learning.
  • Strong Microsoft computer skills (MSWord, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Class 5 Drivers License.

  • Iteratively define project ideas to progress from an idea to a clearly defined scope and work plan that is achievable and will meet client expectations. Engage and educate clients as the project concept is developed to ensure understanding, fit, and support.
  • Develop project proposals that clearly define scope and approach, work plan and budget to facilitate client approval, and to support project funding applications.
  • Prepare and submit funding applications to support projects. Where required, adjust project scope and approach to align with funding parameters.
  • Identify the required skills required in the project team, and with the support of GEA leadership, assemble a team capable of delivering the project. Prepare and manage RFPs and subcontracts where required to augment the project team.
  • Manage project execution following accepted project management practices. Clearly communicate with clients and with GEA leaders to ensure all stakeholders are continuously aware of project status and issues.
  • Build capacity in our clients by openly engaging with them at all stages of project development and delivery.
  • Communicate with clients and community members about project goals, principles, and activities to maintain understanding and support for the project.
  • Other duties as assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate in community energy planning and opportunity assessment to develop an understanding of the client’s current practices as well as the opportunities for improvement, and to develop relationships that will support project planning and delivery.
  • Develop project proposals, presentations, and funding applications as required to facilitate project approval and startup.
  • Conduct detailed analysis (i.e., lifecycle analysis) to quantify the economic and environmental benefits of proposed projects and be prepared to explain the lifecycle model and details to clients and funders.
  • Interface with various government bodies to help clients apply for funding and report on projects.
  • Develop project plans, complete with budgets, schedules, and work plans. Manage and report on these to clients, Greenplanet leaders and staff, and at times, government agencies.
  • Be prepared to adapt project scope and approach as client understanding, requirements, and funding capacity evolves. This is often as important as having a good plan in the first place.
  • Develop business with new and existing clients through proactive relationship management, networking, written and verbal proposals, developing and maintaining marketing materials such as PowerPoint decks and case studies.
  • Ongoing research and learning on specific technologies and businesses as required to support project development and delivery.
